Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
The name Neuro linguistic programming can be broken down as follows:
- Neuro - which refers to the brain and neural network that feeds into the brain.
- Linguistic - verbal and non-verbal communications that pass through the neral network.
- Programming - how these communications are processed.
NLP provides models and techniques allowing people to develop states of individual excellence, create empowering beliefs and make life enhancing choices. All of these models and techniques are based on certain principles or assumptions known as NLP Presuppositions some of which are listed below.
People have all the resources they need to succeed All too ften we spend all of our time looking for answers outside of ourselves when, in reality, we should be looking inwards.
People have the ability to experience one-off learning
If a child has a bad experience with a dentist they could grow up never forgetting it. Then, even after many yars the very thought of a dentist, or anything related to dentistry, can trigger intense fear.
People make the best choice(s) available to them We make choices based on our own personal history based on experiences and what we are taught.
Experience has a structure
Our thoughts and memories have a pattern to them. If we change the pattern our experience will change also.
If one person can do something then others can learn to to do so to
All too often we think things are impossible before we even try them. In some cases there are physical or enviromental differences which can make a difference.
Our minds and bodies are part of the same system Our thoughts can change our physiology and vice versa.
You cannot NOT communicate
We are always comminucating with others even if we are not speaking. Our posture, our eyes and our movements send out messages to others. Our thoughts communicate with ourselves.
The meaning of communication is the response it gets
People will always process your communications through their own map.
Underlying every behaviour is a positve intent Identifying the positive intent can allow us to identify different choices.
If what you are doing isn't working then do something else
Often we are stuck in situations where we continually make the same choices and woder why things always work out the same way. If you always do what you have always done you will always get the same results

NLP
NLP is the abbreviation for Neuro-Linguistic Programming which began in the early seventies when Richard Bandler, a mathematician, and John Grinder, a linguist asked themselves a simple but fascinating question: "What is it that makes the difference between somebody who is merely competent at any given skill, and somebody who excels at the same skill?"
They studied people who excelled in thier respective fields, initially in the area of Psycotherapy, notably Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton Ericskon, and were able to identify what they were doing, both consciously and unconsiously that, that made them excel.
It did not stop there and they went on to model experts in areas such as Management, Training, Education and Sales. By studying these people they found they were able to model those skills, learn them and also pass them on to others.
